Choice Sheets

Next year I think that I would like to join the yearbook class, it seems like a lot of fun helping design the yearbook and even having your own article in it.  Looking at the past yearbooks I always liked how it has been design by the individual students customizing their very own page, so i want to be able to do the same and have my own creative contribution to the school yearbook

Abandoned Theme Parks

1.)  Of all the abandoned theme park i think the one i would like to visit and photograph would be the one located in Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara, Japan.  The park has a very creepy, foggy, and haunted look to it.  This caught my attention because it seems like the perfect set for a horror film, it really looks haunted and abandoned. Its rusty, foggy, wet, broken down, and has those creepy wax figures everywhere.

2.)
Takakanonuma

3.)
  • Haunted New Jersey Psychiatric Hospital
  • Niagra Falls
  • Denbigh Asylum
  • Abandoned Six Flags New Orleans
  • Alcatraz
4.)
    Denbigh Asylum - By: Shepy

5.)  I think it would be fun to photograph the Denbigh Asylum because I am a very big fan of haunted and spooky places, so this place definitely caught my attention.  The fact that it is an abandoned mental institution in Britain just makes everything even creepier and more interesting, knowing that this massive building house thousands of mentally ill people who received harsh treatment and care just gives the place a very negative energy and vibe flowing through every corridor.  I would like to capture photos from inside the rooms of a few individual patients to try and see their point of view of the institution.

6.)  In order for me to actually visit and photograph this location I would first off have to catch a flight to Britain.  Find a hotel for my partners and I who i will take with me to the Aslyum because being there alone would not be fun because its an experience that should happen within a group of people.  I would give everyone a camera and try and make myself one of the patients of the institution and try and get shots from what there point of view might have been and told my partners to do the same.  Before hand of course i would have to get permission of the current owner of the building or land where the building is located.

    Portraits and Self Portraits

This photo specifically caught my eye because i can almost immediately tell the story behind the picture.  The teenage girl growing up on a family farm in Texas sitting on what might had been one of her grandparents cars.  How do i know she is from Texas?; The football jersey she is wearing.  I liked this photo because the photographer made it very easy for the viewer to tell what he wanted the main subject to be, and sort of put a story behind it.  I would rather use this self portrait method than the professional portrait method below.

This photo caught my eye because i seems to have some humor behind it, with the guy posing as Carlos Santana.  I think this photo could be used to promote Santana's music or the culture that he is involved in, kind of a hippie or musician lifestyle.  All the colors in this photo keep the viewers eyes focused on the photo, because it isnt boring! There's not much going on, but there's still alot for the eyes to look at.

    My First Print

Jose Verastegui was already working diligentley on a physics lab in Ms. Patricks classroom during the first class period of the day.  Following in Jose's example his classmate sitting alongside of him chooses to also focus on his school work.
1.)  The boy on the right has a slighty sharper focus than the boy on the left, you can see more of his face alot clearer and can even read what his t-shirt says as well.  The left hand side is in focus but not as much as the right and it isnt as visible do to the light meter not being properly adjusted or slight miscalculations while processig the photo.

2.)  There is good contrast in the photo for the most part, light and dark parts of the photo can easily be identified in a reasonable shade for the brightness of the color in real life.  There are no black spot in a light spot or anything of that sort.

3.)  The photos frame is well filled with great depth and perception displaying two Akins High School students working on a lab.  In this photo i was aiming for depth and was in a way using the rule of thirds.  I tried to give the viewer a kind of first person view of a classroom environment.

4.)  There is absolutely no yellowing in my black and white print at all, im very happy with the quality of my final product.

5.)  I cannot notice any print spots on my photo, I do not see any random blobs of a different shade in one area in the entire photo, everything is nice and clear.

6.)  All of my negatives, my contacet sheet, test strip, and final print are stored in my folder i am not missing any of these items.

    Ethics In Fashion Photography

    1.)
    • Freckles are covered up
    • Lips are touched up
    • Hair is teased and styled
    • Make Up is used excessively
    • Computer editing makes a completley different person
    • Head is lifted
    • Eye Brows are lifted
    • Neck is thinned
    • Ears are teased
    • skin tone is different
2.)  I think its unethical, they are promoting a product that supposedly has this effect creating a beautiful face when in reality the commercial crew had to do hours of make up on the model and even after the photo shoot further computer editing had to be done so I think that the company is lying to customers giving them hope that their product has these incredible abilities when they really dont.

3.)  I think under circumstances involving important people doing things or actions involving the U.S Government are times when photos should not be manipulated because if other countries see the photos they may be upset or offended.

4.)  I think comsetic changes are acceptable, but only to a certain extent.  Completely changing a person figure is not acceptable in my eyes.

5.)  Fashion photography edits their photos to best benefit the companies image and the models figure, photojournalism uses more just the basic methods of photograhy to capture very good photos.

6.)  Fashion photography has a very distant relationship to reality, it is very shady and hides alot of things from the viewer.  At times completley changing the appearance of a model.  Photojournalism has a very good relationship to reality, everything is very first person view, no editing, no fancy computer cropping, just clean, good photography.

    Negatives Evaluation

1.)  Most of my negatives look pretty legit, i think a good 10 photos will be developed and look very good.

2.)  From looking at my negatives i'd have to say that maybe 2 or 3 photos will not come out so well, I most likley didnt pay much attention to the light meter while taking these particular photos and thats why i think they wont come out in a good quality.

3.)  I think the photo that i took of coach platts teaching his criminal law class will come out looking best after development, it is the most clear photo and the lighting seems to be just perfect. Not to bright, or too dark.

4.)  I think that the best quality in my best photo would be the focus, hardly any of my photos are blurry but this one particular photo of a criminal law class is just crystal clear.  Everyone of the students faces and posters on the walls are easily identifiable and are not faded or blurry what so ever.

5.)  The advanced photo composition technique that is present in my favorite would probably be the rule of thirds.  I caught a student up close at the far left hand corner of the picture and in his background is a less focused picture of his fellow classmates also doing their school work.

    Photo Manipulation And Ethics

    1.

    A. The story is giving examples of how sometimes photographers go too far when using photo manipulation and can mess up a photo.  One photographer decided to clone over a person in one portrait.  This is a terminal offense at most U.S. daily newspapers. That photographer was later fired and all for an unnecessary change in a photo.  The stories main message is telling photographers to be careful with all editing and manipulating with photos that will be publicly displayed.

    B.  I think that this type of photo editing is acceptable but to a certain point.  For example adding another missile to a military launch is unnacceptable, another country could be bothered by it or the military could be brought to attention for supposebly launching more missiles than they really did.  I think it depends on the viewers level of discretion whether or not a photo is unethical or acceptable.

    1.

    After Manipulation
    Before

This could probably and most definantly be the most unethical photo any photographer could manipulate into!  The soldier was originally giving his hand out to the man holding his baby probably telling him to take a seat and it was manipulated into looking as if the soldier was pointing the rifle at the man threatening to shoot him if he did not take a seat.  The manipulation in this photo could cause big issues for the U.S. Military.

    Drug Cartels In Mexico

The war against drug cartels in Mexico is indeed a very bad problem, but, i do no think that it would be this bad now had the Mexican Government confronted the problem earlier.  The only reason that any country could become that out of control is because the government didnt address the problem the proper way right when it began to escalate.  "And then another body. And by the end of the day, it was 10. The next day, 10. The next day, 10" says a police officer.  What I am wondering is why instead of just sitting around watching the massacre happen, why doesnt the Government or Police Agencys come up with a way to stop or at least decrease the number of fatalities that are happening on a daily basis on the streets of Juarez.  I personally think that it is the Mexican Governments fault that the cartels wrath has become as bad as it is today.

Of all the photos on the slide show i think that my personal favorite would be the one of the Juarez Police officer wearing a mask and holding a rifle.  I find that if even the police officers are that scared of the cartels that they hide their identities from them to avoid being murdered or kidnapped then the War against the Drug Cartel has already been lost.  The Cartel just about have complete and total control of Juarez.  The photographer got up close but yet still far enough to show the setting of the photo.  The background is out of focus giving a kind of illusion that the Officer is taking up all the space in the picture when in reality what the photographer is trying to do is attract the viewers eyes to the main subject which would be the Police Officer.  He used the photographic technique of Simplicity very well, I had no problem figuring out what the main subject of the photo was and I understood the message the photographer was trying to give out.

Making A Black And White Print

    MATERIALS:
    • Light
    • Enlarger
    • Safelight
    • Changing Bag
    • Photographic Paper
    • Stop bath
    • Photographic Film
    CHEMICALS:
    • Photographic Developer
    • Photographic Fixer
    • Stop Bath
    • Wash
PROCESS:  Generally the first step in making a black and white print is by making a contact print of the negative to decide whether or not you would like to enlarge the photo or not.  Then you expose the photo and use the "Dodging and Burning" method by adjust what amount of light you want the photo to be exposed to.  After the paper has been exposed the chemical processing comes into play, first by immersion in a photographic developer, stalling development witha stop bathm and then afterwards fixing in the photographic fixer.  Whe the print comes out the fixer it is then washed to remove all the processing chemicals from the proccessing and it is then finally dried.  Some professional photographers take additional steps like toning, though it is not a necessary step.

emulsion-a composition sensitive to some or all of the actinic rays of light, consisting of one or more of the silver halides suspended in gelatin, applied in a thin layer to one surface of film or the like.

aperture-an opening, usually circular, that limits the quantity of light that can enter an optical instrument.

exposure-the total amount of light received by a photosensitive surface or an area of such a surface, expressed as the product of the degree of illumination and the period of illumination.

safe light-a darkroom light with a filter that transmits only those rays of the spectrum to which films, printing paper, etc., are not sensitive.

dodging-to shade and area of a print from exposure for a period of time, while exposing the rmainder of the print in order to lighten or eliminate the area.

    Post Shoot Reflection

    1.  During my shoot out in the classrooms of Akins High School I only encountered one main issue, which was trying not to disrupt the students and the learning enviroment of the classroom while trying to get good angles and close to the students.  I solved this problem by trying to be as quite and unnoticable as possible.

    2.  During my photoshoot i found myself focusing on the focus of the photos, I made sure every image was in focus before I took the photo so i am confident that none of my photos will come out blurry at all.

    3.  I used the rule of thirds mostly, i caught one student very close and focused doing his work in one corner of the photo, then the rest of the students in the background also doing their own work.

    4.  The next time i shoot i think im going to try mor angles and height in my photographs. most of my photos were from a standing point of view.

    Proccessing Black And White Photos

    MATERIALS:
    • Running water
    • Chemical Manufacturer Specification sheets
    • Place where you can mix liquid
    • Measuring Beakers
    • Very accurate thermometer.
    • Funnels
    • Water
    • Stir Sticks
    • Storage Bottle
    • Stop Bath
    CHEMICALS:
    • Developer
    • Acid Stop
    • Fixer
    • Water
    • (These materials can be bought online on ebay and amazon)
The Process:  First you must load your film into a small plastic reel in complete darkness, any light will compromise the outcome of the photos. You must find two notches on the real (this is where you will feed the film into), once you have the front part of the film in you will hold onto the sides of the reel and twist one hand then the other, this will gradually pull the film into the reel. After the film is completely on the reel you will put the reel in the can and put the lid on the can, now you are ready to turn on the lights and start developing. Fill the can according to the manufacturers instructions and make sure you pour the right solutions in the chemical containers, after this you will put the chemical containers into the water bath. You will then pour developer into the can and leave it there for appr. 3 minutes, lightly agitate every 30 seconds to spread the chemicals inside the can. After 3 minutes pour the can empty and pour the acid stop into the can and let it sit for 3 minutes and 30 seconds, also agitate lightly every 30 seconds. After time runs up once again empty the tank and pour fixer into the tank. Agitate for about 20 seconds then every minute for 10 seconds.  At the end of the recommended time remove the lid and pour out the chemistry. Now you must wash the can, allow water to run in for about 15 seconds, then put the reels into a film washer. leave it there for about 5 minutes then remove the film and hang to dry.  Return in 3 or 4 hours and you will have your finished product.

    The Basic Matierals
     Definitions:
Contact Sheet- a contact print, usually of all frames of a developed roll of negative print film, used as a proof print
Agitation- the act or process of agitating; state of being agitated: She left in great agitation.
Enlarger- an apparatus used for making projection prints, having a head for holding, illuminating, and projecting a film negative and a bed for holding a sheet of sensitized printing paper.
Developer- a reducing agent or solution for developing a film or the like.
Stop Bath-  acid bath or rinse for stopping the action of a developer before fixing a negative or print. Fixer- fixative

What The Pros Are Doing - Repetition

This photo was most likely taken inside a cheese factory or competition of some sort, with several rows of several different kinds of cheese of different shapes and sizes all leading the viewers eyes to different judges looking andcritiquing the different cheeses.  The photographer uses all the different cheeses lined up in rows to show repetition in the photo, he did it excellently and it work perfectly.
In this Unique and Exquisite photo, several rows of airplane seats are displayed presenting the same image on the back of the headrest.  The seats, screens, windows, and even lights are excellent examples of the photographic method of repetition.  The photographer got the perfect angle at the end of the hallway to capture the repetition effect, leading the viewers eye from the back of the row up towards the front rows..
In this photo, the photographer gets an angle that in a way leads the viewers eyes to the fire blazing behind and to the left side of the huge pile of weapons that. The rifles are all stacked verticlly pointing to the sky and taking the viewer toward the fire and smoke in the sky.  The extreme number rifles is the effect of repetition and the photographer used it to his advantage to flatter the fire and smoke in the air.

    American Soldier Slideshow And Captions

    2.

A:  In my personal opinion, I think the most powerful and emotional photo in the slide is the photo taken on March 7th, 2009 at 11:37 a.m. of Ian and his family welcoming him home at the airport.  I can imagine how happy Ian is to finally be home after a year long tour in Iraq, its quite easy to tell that by the huge smile he has on.

B:  The most powerful sequence of photos in my eyes would be "In Country".  There are many photos that show the stress and effects that war in Iraq brings on a soldier.  Ian isnt smiling much in this slide, much worse, he looks very depressed in practically every other picture.

    C. The images work very well together to tell the story, documenting Ian's journey from the very begining before he enlist in the army, all the way until the end of his first year long tour in Iraq.

    3.

A:  For the photos of which Ian is the main subject, the photographer puts the captions in past tense, kind of leaving the viewer to wonder what is going to happen later on now that he is back home.

B:  The captions of the photos really help the viewer know what is going on in the photo, stating what the mother is saying or thinking in some cases, or what Ian is feeling when he arrives back home.

    4.

    A. "March 7, 2009. 11:37 a.m. Ian arrives at the airport to his families open arms, a smile is practically tattooed on his face, there is a vibe of happiness and relief in the room, as Ian hugs his loving family".

"Momma smell my boot, that's Iraq" Ian tells his mother holding his Army boot up to her nose.  Ian is back to his comic self and he is enjoying life back at home".

"Ian and his troop practice clearing a room in the "Four Man Stack" formation".

    Funny Captions

Today Alex Rivera is going to go wrangler up the cows on the his farm, what better way to get close to your farm animals, then to look like one? Alex's "Cow" contraption is built on the frame of one of Evil Kinivals motorcycles that he used to jump a field of cows on a dairy farm, now its "Under" the cow, not over!
Today, August 31st, Adrian Moya found a interesting slide of an elephant you climb inside of and "Happen" to slide out its rear end through a long brown chute.  The elephant is in Crowly Corners, Tennessee, and Adrian is hispanic, unlikley but very true.

During his spare time, Mr.Reeves like to take time off to simply just....."Catch Some Air" by riding wild broncos and getting bucked off.  A very fun activity for Mr. Reeves to relieve stress from constant photography.

    Marlboro Marine

1: I think this photographer got really close and personal, allowing the viewer to hear every detail and have a feeling of almost being in the room with the marine.  The angles were tight and up close to the subject, depressing, and gave a very good view of what the marine was feeling.

2:The sudden blurs between photos and slides was giving a feeling of being lost, or a feeling of confusion but still able to know what is going on in the slide.

    3:

A: The photo of him laying down on the bed smoking a cigarette and watching the news on war in the middle east, it shows that he is having a very hard time adapting to life back in the united states, he misses being in the action of combat.  He got so used to being in that uniform and holding that rifle that its all he wants to do, it is now all he knows to do.

B: The sequence most powerful i think is where he is having arguements with his wife, and the relationship just isnt working out.  It just so depressing not being able to do anything about how the war has affected the marine and how it is affecting the marriage.

C:  The Audio is very detailed. Almost putting you in the room with the marine feeling the negative vibe of the room almost depressing you just by watching how the war has effected the marine. The audio lets you hear almost every breath and step of the room.

D:  The images work together by kinda being put in chronological order, like a movie. Showing when he came home, how he felt, what problems he came by and so on.  The images just get more and more depressing as the story of the marines return home goes on.

I find this photo interesting because i cant help but want to know exactly what happened to the cyclist less than a second after this photo was taken.  Im predict feelings of pain, regret, and a lot of rolling on the ground and screaming from this guy.  Im also interested if the biker thought about what could happen if his bicycle peg misses the rail. Still a very good angle by the photographer.

    PIEA Photo Contest

I find this photo inspiring and powerful because i remember as a child how much i liked Christmas and getting visits from "Santa Claus".  This is a very good angle of photography capturing the audiences view and  a part of  Santas perspective.  The lighting is just right, not too bright or too dark.  The exposure is good almost every of the childrens faces can be seen clearly.  My aunt and cousin happen to be in this photo as well, just another reason why i chose this photo it caught me by surprise.

Great Black and White Photographers part 3

1.)  What first caught my eye about this photographer is that she has many picture of well dressed women looking away from the camera, she has a wierd way of putting one or more stories into every picture she takes.  Alot of her pictures were taking around the time of world war II.  So many of her photos show signs of sadness or perserverence.  I chose the two photos below because even though the photos are in black and white, the photos are not dull at all, they are very clear.

2.)  I see a women, being followed, maybe drowning.  She is independent and does not need help from anyone.  She has been through touph times and just wants to come out to be something more than just a regular women of her time.  I smell the exaust of the train and the iron of the tracks, The womens perfume.  I hear the trains whistle and tires screeching on the train track.  The water running along the land, and the sound of the water as it moves around splashing.  I taste the water that is possibly filling the lungs of the women who appears to about to drown, and the polluted air inside the train station.  I feel the fear or insecurity of the women as she feels the need to look over her shoulder, the relaxation of letting one self just lay back and float in the water.

    Toni Frissel
Toni has no definant record of the exact date of her birth but it is said to be in 1907.  She was born in New York City.  She was married to McNeil Bacon.  She worked with so many great photographers of her age, and was involved in an apprenticeship with Cecil Beaton.  She started of being a fashion photographer in 1931 for Vogue.  After being a fashion photographer for a few years Toni wanted to take on new challenges, so she volunteered to be a photographer for the red cross during world war 2 in 1941 and was the official photographer for the Womens Army Corps.  She took countless photos of nurses and soldiers fighting on the front lines putting her life in danger to catch maybe just a handful of good photos.  After the war ended she started taking pictures for sports illustrated.  She is the first women to work for sports illustrated in 1953.  She also illustrated several books such as, A childs garden of verses, Bermuda, Mother Goose, The King Ranch, and Tethered.  Unfortunantly Toni Frissel died on April 17, 1988 of Alzhiemers Disease.

    Most Interesting Stuff

This photo fills in the frame of the picture quite well. there is not much space in the photo that is not focused on the main big subject, which in this case would be the kids on the sky walk.  What ever is left is kind of blurred out or out of focus giving it that illusion that the kids take up the entire photo, not just a large portion of it.

    Action Or Emotion

This photo shows alot of action and emotion.  Action from the band pretty much rocking the crowds eyes out and the intense guitar solo that the guy in the far right corner is about to shred off the guitar.  Emotion coming from the black and white coloring, the cropping leaving alot of the photo out and gives the viewer space to imagine what the actual scene of the photo really is.  Is it a rock, country, or a sad song that the band is playing?

    The Story

This is an excellent photo of a boy reading to a class of young kindergardners.  I think the story behind this photo is about the boy becoming a kind of role model to the kindergardners and reading to them a book showing them that they will one day not to far from now be able to read the way the boy is reading to them during story time.

    Hurricane Ike

This is a photo of Hurricane Ike taken most likley from a sattelite. This photo strikes me as using Depth to catch the viewers eye.  It has a very good perspective and shows alot, like the storms strands of rain clouds and the enormous size of the storm. I'd say that this is a really good picture from a very good angle, because it doesnt show you the ENTIRE storm leaving your imagination to think about the true size of this colossal storm.

This photo is an excellent example on how cropping can make a picture look much better.  When an photographer crops a picture, he or she is leaving space for your imagination to think about just how bad the flood was in this picture for example.  The viewer doesnt know exactly WHERE this man is.  Is he in a ditch, middle of a city street, or maybe in a big field?  Sometimes its good to get real close and not give too much away.  This photographer made it work perfectly.

    Simplicity

    Simplicity

This photo has a very general and simple layout, it has the perfect angle of the jet pilot gazing down at the ruins of the pentagon after the attacks of 9/11. Its somewhat of a close-up and a distant photo.

    Lines

    Lines

This photo is a perfect example of the photographer using lines.  The two huge light towers in the exact spot of where the twin towers used to stand making a kind of memorial. the lines of light point straight up and parallel to one another.

    Rule Of Thirds

    The Rule Of Thirds
This photo is an excellent example of a photographer using rule of thirds.  The photo would not have the same effect had the helicopter been dead center, its put off to the side kind of showing the viewer the impacted wall behind it. A very excellent photo with a perfect background and angle of the photo.

    Framing

    Framing

Here the framing is the bottom of the bridge to the surface of the water, closing off at the left side of the picture.  The photos main focus is the two burning towers,  it does not allow you to see much more than the world trade center, ensuring that the viewer knows the photographers intentions.

    Pinhole Finale

    Differences
    Negative Positive
    The Picture is flipped Horizontally
In the positive you can kind of see clouds or individual leaves that you cant in the negative.
    Everything is backwards
There is much more detail visible in the positive like the lumps on the tree trunk

    Pinhole Camera Review

I like this photo because it has a nice angle of the slides and i think thats hard to find and get it with one shot. The Photographer showed good taste and the picture is not blurry what so ever. This is a very nice photo its pretty sharp and i can see most of the things in this picture.

I don't really like this photo, it seems kind of a pointless photo to me(no offense to the photographer), but i cant tell what that big thing in the middle is. "Is that a river tube?" The picture is not blurry, its pretty clear, but it doesn't help the fact that theres not much to look at. Photographer could show more creativity, i give him props for trying
