Making A Black And White Print

MATERIALS:
  • Light
  • Enlarger
  • Safelight
  • Changing Bag
  • Photographic Paper
  • Stop bath
  • Photographic Film
CHEMICALS:
  • Photographic Developer
  • Photographic Fixer
  • Stop Bath
  • Wash
PROCESS:  Generally the first step in making a black and white print is by making a contact print of the negative to decide whether or not you would like to enlarge the photo or not.  Then you expose the photo and use the "Dodging and Burning" method by adjust what amount of light you want the photo to be exposed to.  After the paper has been exposed the chemical processing comes into play, first by immersion in a photographic developer, stalling development witha stop bathm and then afterwards fixing in the photographic fixer.  Whe the print comes out the fixer it is then washed to remove all the processing chemicals from the proccessing and it is then finally dried.  Some professional photographers take additional steps like toning, though it is not a necessary step.

emulsion-a composition sensitive to some or all of the actinic rays of light, consisting of one or more of the silver halides suspended in gelatin, applied in a thin layer to one surface of film or the like.

aperture-an opening, usually circular, that limits the quantity of light that can enter an optical instrument.

exposure-the total amount of light received by a photosensitive surface or an area of such a surface, expressed as the product of the degree of illumination and the period of illumination.

safe light-a darkroom light with a filter that transmits only those rays of the spectrum to which films, printing paper, etc., are not sensitive.

dodging-to shade and area of a print from exposure for a period of time, while exposing the rmainder of the print in order to lighten or eliminate the area.
